The first visit to the dentist is an exciting milestone in your child's healthy development. You've probably visited the pediatrician several times during the first year of your child's life. Now it's time to initiate your child's dental care.

It is important to maintain a positive attitude about dental care, as this sets the stage for future dental visits and procedures that may need done. You should aim to speak in positive and friendly terms when referring to the dentist. You want your child to see it as a positive experience rather than a negative one.

Dr. Bruce Vafa and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child's first dental visit by their first birthday. Starting dental care early in life is beneficial for several reasons. It allows problems to be detected early. It also helps parents to properly care for their child's teeth and gums. It gets children familiar with visiting the dentist as part of their routine health care.

What can you expect at the first visit?

At the first visit you and your child will meet with Dr. Bruce Vafa and the staff. A complete medical history will be taken and reviewed. Your child's mouth, teeth, and gums will be examined thoroughly to make sure things are developing normally. You child will be kept comfortable throughout the exam.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions and share any concerns you have regarding your child's dental health. You will also be provided with information on proper diet and nutrition to strengthen the teeth and prevent future cavities.

How to prepare for the first visit:

  • write down any questions you have before your visit
  • talk positive when discussing the first trip the dentist with your child
  • schedule the appointment for a time when your child is well-rested and not hungry

We look forward to meeting you and your child in the office and getting your child's dental health off to a great start. We promise to do our part in making sure your child's first visit to the dentist is a fun and happy experience.
